How to Read a Water Meter: Complete Guide for All Meter Types
Reading your water meter monthly helps you spot leaks early, verify bills, and identify wasteful habits. A small leak can cost EUR 100-300/year in wasted water. Learning to read your meter takes 30 seconds and could save you hundreds.
Where Is Your Water Meter Located?
Water meters are typically found in one of these locations:
- Inside: Basement, under kitchen sink, or in a utility closet
- Outside: In a concrete box or chamber near the street (curb-side box)
- Garden: Near the outdoor water tap or by a wall
- Garage: Along the main water supply line
Can't find your meter? Call your water supplier and ask for the meter location. They're required to tell you. Mark it on your phone map so you can find it quickly next time.
Reading an Analog (Dial) Water Meter
- Look at the black numbers in the left box—these are cubic meters (m³)
- If there are red numbers, these measure liters (1m³ = 1,000 liters)
- Write down only the black numbers—ignore the small dial indicator
- Example: If the display shows 12345, your consumption is 12,345 m³ or 12.345 million liters since installation
Reading a Digital (LCD) Water Meter
Digital meters show consumption directly on a small LCD screen, usually in the format XXXXX.XX m³. Simply read the number from left to right. Some digital meters have a blinking red dot—this shows water flow (if it's blinking when no water is running, you have a leak!).
Calculating Your Monthly Water Consumption
- Step 1: Write down this month's meter reading
- Step 2: Subtract last month's reading
- Step 3: Multiply by 1,000 to convert m³ to liters
- Example: This month 12,350 m³ − Last month 12,330 m³ = 20 m³ = 20,000 liters
Average Water Consumption Benchmarks
| Household Size | Monthly Average | Annual Average |
|---|---|---|
| 1 person | 6-8 m³ | 70-100 m³ |
| 2 people | 10-12 m³ | 120-150 m³ |
| 3-4 people | 14-18 m³ | 160-220 m³ |
| 5+ people | 20-25 m³ | 240-300 m³ |
Signs of a Water Leak
- Consumption suddenly 30%+ higher than normal months
- Red blinking light on digital meter when no water is running
- Damp patches on walls, ceilings, or floors
- Running water sound when all taps are off
- Unusually high bill with no explanation
80% of household water leaks happen inside walls, under floors, or outside buried pipes. If your consumption jumps 50%+, call a plumber immediately. A small leak (even pinhole-sized) can waste 1,000+ liters per day.
potential savings by catching a leak within days instead of months
Make it a monthly habit: read your meter on the same day each month. This gives you early warning of leaks and helps you spot consumption patterns—maybe you'll notice higher usage in summer (garden watering) vs. winter.
